Hat #125 ~ Vintage 1940's/50's Peach Straw Saucer Hat w/Wired Ribbon & Pearl Accent
This is a fabulous hat. It needs a bit of love, but it's simply fantastic. I do believe that this vintage 40's/50's saucer hat was designed for the Kentucky Derby (or other) due to one of the interior labels (see pics). Made of a very tightly woven peachy-apricot straw, which is still intact and still tightly woven, with a bit of steaming this hat could completely come back to life. The wired velvet ribbon has separated from the wire itself (again, see pics), but could be sewn or glued. At the very end of the velvet ribbon is a pearl & rhinestone 'flower' pin, which is such a great little surprise. The original birdcage netting was secured to the back of the hat (perhaps to be used as a wimple, in order to secure the hat under the chin) and remains attached even though the netting itself is in tatters. Manufacturer's label says 'Darcel Exclusive'. The size label also shows a horse and rider with the word 'winner' and size 22. It measures 13 inches across. I hope that someone else sees the history and great potential of this marvelous saucer hat ~ it's certainly worthy of being loved again.
